Brood
The word brood has several definitions, including "a group having a common nature or origin." Obviously, the nature of this group was viperous - meaning they use tactics such as camouflage and speed to ambush their prey with deadly poison. The implication in this passage is that these Sadducees and Pharisees wanted to be baptized, not as an outward and visible sign of faith and repentance, but as a way to blend in and destroy. This Advent, I wonder - what is the inverse of a brood of vipers? What would be the common nature of a group that stood out and moved slowly, and maybe even awkwardly, in the world to share abundant life?
