Recompense
Repay, remunerate, reward, reimburse, requite, return in kind: all of these are synonyms of recompense. Though some of these have a nice ring to them, when partnered with vengeance, recompense seems, indeed, terrible. But then there is the final promise of Isaiah’s words: God will come and save you. The truth is, I need God to save me from the whole cycle of paying and paying back and paying in kind, of rewarding and remunerating and reimbursing. I need God to set me free from the entire economics of exchange embedded in this world so that I can experience, fully and freely, the gift of God’s grace in the salvation of Jesus Christ. What recompense do you need God to save you from?
