Robes
In 1994, the song "The Robe" by Wes King played heavily on rotation at the summer camp where I worked. I can still hear the moody '90s synthesizer ring out, as King sang "The robe is of God… the robe is His (Christ's) grace,". The robe that King sang about wasn't soft; it wasn't fancy or a status symbol. It wasn't a showpiece. It was a robe meant to shelter and comfort the aching, the cold, the lonely, the shut-out, and the worn out. As we draw closer to Christmas, dressing ourselves and our homes in more and more finery, I wonder if there is a place for the robe of grace in our merry-making. I wonder if we, too, can help prepare the way—not for a show—but for the Kingdom of Heaven.
